Reducing the unthinkable priority of hospitals

Hospitals are being forced to prioritize the unthinkable: reducing violence.

Hospitals are a necessary part of our society. They provide a vital service for people who are sick and need medical treatment. But the violence has increased in hospitals.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rise in violence against medical professionals has resulted in an increase of 86 percent in injuries from 2011 to 2018. In a spring 2022 survey by National Nurses United, nearly half of the hospital nurses (48 percent) reported rising workplace violence, more than double the 21.9 percent who responded as such a year prior.

During a visit to a hospital these days, you’ll usually find someone shouting about the late response to an emergency consultation or requesting a surgery opening and the constant ringing (or no ringing at all) with a high number of calls that are not being attended.

There is real tension in hospitals due to sick people that can become violent, combined with a shortage and exhausted staff. But technology platforms can help ease this situation and offer agility to hospitals to be proactive in improving the patient experience.

How can technology platforms help hospitals? Technology and process-oriented implementation help hospitals reduce the gaps in their processes and bring tools to help them do their job. Two major things hospitals can do are the following:

Communication system plaftorm

This system can leverage technology to communicate proactively with the patient with updated information that helps them understand the processes. At the same time, it reduces the nurses' time invested in answering questions over the phone.

In addition, the platform can integrate user cases and workflows that will help the hospital channel the questions accordingly. As an extra level, the hospital can use an outsourced team to take care of specific calls that will give back the time to hospital nurses to do their job.

What will the result look like? Different communication channels (such as instant messaging, email, or even video calls)to patients about:

·     the hours for procedures,

·     how the department will be running,

·     the new process change of service,

·     what to do before the procedure, etc.

Going a step further, the communication platform can be implemented with user cases to help the hospital answer faster to high-priority cases reducing risks, time, and money.

Data Analytics integrated with the EHR

Having updated screened data in combination with specific workflows can help a doctor have the patient's data filtered from acute to less acute to make decisions based on priorities.

The data analytics also supports all the administration processes by having a clear view of the available beds per department. This helps the hospital make better decisions on admissions and understand the departments’ bed needs.

The user cases and workflows can help the hospital understand where the gaps are to reduce costs and increase the income that can lead to new staff hires. These are just a few scenarios where Data Analytics can help change your hospital to a more agile organization.

We know that this doesn't reduce the violence that comes with sickness, but definitively reduces tension between patients (and patient's family) and hospital staff. These systems help…

  • the patient to be informed,

  • the hospital makes better decisions to assist the patient's health in a timely manner,

  • reduce time in unnecessary department steps using communication workflows, and

  • in the end, improve the patient experience.
